Leader Opportunites

There are several opportunities for us to recognize the LEADERS we are growing here at Gateway!

AR Millionaire Club – Being a member of the Millionaire Club means that a student has read at least a million words this school year. Our Accelerated Reader program tracks the number of words read by students. The record for the number of words read by a student in one school year is 8,784,256 words!
* If students become ‘millionaires’ by March 13,2019, then they will be part of the Millionaire Club photo for the yearbook.
* Students that become ‘millionaires’ by May 13th will be invited to the Millionaire Luncheon and Recognition on May 17, 2019.
Students will enjoy a special lunch catered by a local restaurant. The Luncheon takes place during the school day and is only for Millionaire Club members.


Sunshine State Books – Students are encouraged to read and take an AR test on the books designated by the State of Florida as the Sunshine State books. Students who read and successfully pass the AR test on the Sunshine State books are recognized in the following ways.
* Read 5 Sunshine State books and pass AR tests by Nov 2, 2018 earn a Popcorn party on Nov 9.
*Read 9 Sunshine State books and pass AR tests by Feb 8, 2019 earn an ice cream sundae treat at lunch on Feb 15, 2019.
*Read all 15 Sunshine State books and pass AR tests by May 3, 2019 earn a Field Trip to Barnes & Noble Book Store where you will pick out a book, get a treat in the café, and play a game with the Barnes and Noble staff on May 13, 2019 (tentative date).


Battle of Books Team – Students who read at least 11 Sunshine State books (and pass AR tests) by March 1, 2019 are eligible to try out for Battle of Books Team. Team members chosen must agree to read all 15 Sunshine State books by May 3, 2019. The team competes with other schools in May at the district Battle of the Books competition. Teams answer questions about the Sunshine State books. May 24, 2019 is the tentative date for Battle of Books competition date. It takes place during the school day in the School Board meeting room.


Elementary National Honor SocietyOpen to students in grade 4 or 5 who have a GPA of 3.75 by the end of the third quarter. Students eligible for NEHS membership receive a letter inviting them to complete the application for membership and gather recommendations for personal responsibility and meaningful service to school/community. Applications due from eligible students April 18, 2019. Induction Ceremony is May 15, 2019 at 6:30 pm.

Science Fair – Students in 4th and 5th grade have the opportunity for their science fair projects to be selected to participate in the District Science Fair competition.
